The short answer
A private jet from Teterboro to Chicago takes about two hours going west and a little less than that coming home. A one-way charter usually costs between about $14,500 and $25,000 in a light jet, because the aircraft normally has to return empty. Midway is the usual choice: it is the closest of the three main airports to downtown, and its longest runway is 6,522 feet. What most people don't know: Chicago Executive, the other popular choice, has a longest runway of 5,001 feet, about 1,500 feet shorter, and sits twice as far from the city as Midway, so a larger jet or a downtown meeting often points to Midway.

What goes into the price
On a two-hour trip the flight itself is most of the bill, and positioning is the rest.
Flight time. Priced at the operator’s hourly rate. The westbound leg is the longer one.
Positioning. An aircraft that leaves you in Chicago usually flies back to New York empty, or has to be paid for while it waits. A one-way trip therefore often costs close to a same-day round trip.
Taxes and fees. The 7.5% federal excise tax and a $5.30 per-passenger segment fee in 2026, handling at both airports, catering, and de-icing on winter mornings.
Unlike Nantucket or Aspen, none of the three Chicago airports publishes a fee schedule that we could confirm, so handling and landing charges are quoted per trip.
What makes this route cheaper or more expensive
The airport. Midway and O’Hare are busy airline airports. Chicago Executive is smaller and a different drive. Charges differ by FBO, and Jake asks for them up front.
Day and time. Departures at the busiest times of the week cost more and are harder to book. If your schedule is flexible, ask Jake to price a second time on the same day.
Season. Winter adds de-icing and the strongest headwinds. Summer is the easier season for the westbound leg.
Aircraft size. The route is short enough that a larger jet saves only minutes, so cabin size and baggage space should decide it, not speed.
Empty legs on this route
New York and Chicago are both busy charter markets, so aircraft regularly reposition between them. We have no published data on how often, and Charter Jet One’s figure for the discount is up to 75%.
An illustrative example: a midsize jet drops a group in Chicago on a Thursday and heads back to Teterboro empty that evening. A traveller going the same day could fly it for less. It shows how such a flight comes about. It isn’t one for sale, and empty legs run on the operator’s timing.
Departing from Teterboro
Teterboro is about 12 miles from Midtown, roughly 22 minutes in free-flow traffic and much longer at rush hour. Its runways are 6,997 and 6,014 feet, and it has Jet Aviation, Atlantic and several Signature terminals. The airport asks for voluntary restraint between 11 pm and 6 am, and night departures from runway 24 are limited to 80 decibels from 10 pm to 7 am. Neither usually matters for a Chicago trip.
Choosing your Chicago airport
| Airport | Distance from the city (FAA) | Longest runway | FBOs | Notes |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Midway (MDW) | 9 miles southwest | 6,522 ft | Atlantic, Signature | Departures asked to climb quickly through 1,500 ft from 10 pm to 6 am |
| Chicago Executive (PWK) | 18 miles northwest | 5,001 ft | Atlantic, Signature, Ascension | Tower 6 am to 10 pm weekdays, 7 am to 10 pm weekends. No turbine run-ups 10 pm to 7 am |
| O’Hare (ORD) | 14 miles northwest | 13,000 ft | Signature | Noise abatement procedures 10 pm to 7 am. Charter operators are asked to contact Signature about security rules before departure |
Midway is our usual first choice. It is closest to downtown and the South and West sides, it has two FBOs and the longest runway of the smaller-airport options.
Chicago Executive suits the north suburbs, Lake Forest and Highland Park, and anyone who wants to avoid a large airport. Its runways are shorter, so check the aircraft’s performance with a full cabin.
O’Hare has far more runway than any private flight needs, with one FBO. It’s the right choice for a connection or a stay near the airport, and it’s often the busiest of the three.
Winds and the westbound leg
Winds aloft over the United States mostly blow west to east, so a flight to Chicago meets a headwind and the flight home has a tailwind. In one published example a 140 mph headwind cut a jet’s ground speed from 562 to 422 mph, and the same wind added to it on the return. That was a very strong wind, not a typical one.
The jet stream tends to move south and strengthen in winter and to move north and weaken in summer. In practice, expect the westbound flight to take the most time between roughly December and March, and the two directions to differ by less in summer.
A Chicago trip is within the range of every aircraft on this page, so headwinds change the schedule, not the choice of jet. A turboprop feels them most because its cruise speed is lower.
Which aircraft fits best
A light jet such as a Phenom 300E is the natural choice for up to six people. A midsize jet gives more room for bags on a trip with a client dinner or an overnight stay. A super-midsize suits eight or nine passengers and flies the route with margin if you add a stop on the way back. A turboprop such as a Pilatus PC-12 costs less but adds about 45 minutes westbound.
How Jake handles this route
Jake chooses the Chicago airport from where you’re going and the aircraft you fly, not from habit. He checks the operator is ARGUS Gold or Platinum rated, confirms the FBO and its hours, allows for the westbound headwind when he sets your departure time, and arranges a car at the aircraft. In winter he also plans for de-icing, and he often meets clients on the ramp at Teterboro before departure.
Questions people ask about Teterboro to Chicago
How long is a private jet flight from New York to Chicago?
About two hours from Teterboro to Midway in a light jet, gate to gate, and closer to an hour and 40 minutes coming back. The great-circle distance is about 619 nautical miles. The difference between directions comes from the prevailing winds, so it is bigger in winter.
Which Chicago airport is best for a private jet?
Midway for most trips, because it is about 9 miles from Chicago and has a 6,522-foot runway. Chicago Executive suits the north suburbs and avoids the big-airport traffic. O'Hare is best when you are staying near it or connecting, and it has one FBO.
How much does a private jet from New York to Chicago cost?
Roughly $14,500 to $25,000 one way in a light jet and $17,000 to $28,500 in a midsize, as an estimate for October 2026. The range reflects the aircraft's empty return flight, which is why a one-way trip costs close to a same-day round trip.
Why is the flight to Chicago longer than the flight home?
Winds aloft over the United States mostly blow west to east. A jet flying west has a headwind and one flying east has a tailwind. A science writer's published example showed a 140 mph headwind cutting a ground speed from 562 to 422 mph, and the same wind adding to it on the return.
Is the jet stream stronger in winter?
Yes. Over the United States it tends to move south and blow harder in winter, and to move north and weaken in summer. For a Chicago trip that means the westbound leg is slowest between roughly December and March.
Does Chicago Executive Airport have customs?
Only a limited service. The FAA listing shows a user-fee customs facility Monday to Friday from 11 am to 7 pm, with two hours' notice. This matters only if you are arriving from outside the US, which a Teterboro trip is not.
Are there night restrictions at Midway or Chicago Executive?
Neither has a curfew in the FAA data. Midway asks departures to climb quickly through 1,500 feet from 10 pm to 6 am. Chicago Executive's tower closes at 10 pm, and turbine engine run-ups are not allowed from 10 pm to 7 am.
Which FBOs can handle a private jet in Chicago?
Atlantic Aviation and Signature Aviation at Midway, and Atlantic, Signature and Ascension at Chicago Executive. O'Hare lists Signature Aviation as its FBO. Jake books the one that suits your aircraft and arranges the car.
Can a large jet use Chicago Executive?
Its longest runway is 5,001 feet, and the second is 4,415. That works for many light and midsize jets, but larger aircraft with a full cabin and fuel usually have an easier time at Midway or O'Hare, so the operator checks the performance figures.
Can I get an empty leg to Chicago?
Sometimes, but we can't point to a flight on offer. Chicago and New York are both busy charter markets, so aircraft often reposition between them. Tell Jake your dates and how flexible you are.
